At Rocky Mountain of College of Art + Design, I have taught the Digital Design 1 class to Sophomores and up. The semester starts with ideation: image, mood, and concept building for a small digital-only collection. Students start drawing freehand in Procreate on an iPad. Then we bring their lyrical drawings into Illustrator where they learn to professionally create flats with color and print. They learn how to edit and hone their garments as the collection evolves over time. We then build the garments in Clo3D which includes making and fitting the patterns on their ideal customer to make virtual prototypes. Last but not least, students learn how to build a commercial tech pack, so they are thinking of all the construction details, costs of goods, colorways, and profitability.
